Weekend Stuff & a Hair Update

I know why time is going at warp speed:

Christmas.

I blinked and lost the last half of last week. So I really wanted to kinda lolly-gag through the weekend.

Didn’t happen.

But lots of stuff DID happen!! My little brother turned 17. I made him a giant Reese’s Cup birthday cake. It required lots of recipe reading and a tart pan. Buuuut there is nowhere out here to purchase a tart pan except Wal-Mart. And I really just COULD NOT make myself go to Wal-Mart. On Friday afternoon we went to the bank (because some loser hijacked our debit card number last week and tried to spend $956 at wiggle.com, P.S. what the hell is that, so we cancelled our card and now we are living like it’s 1953 trying to run to the bank on a Friday afternoon to make sure there’s enough cash to get us through the weekend and it is SO annoying) and we spied Wal-Mart from the relative safety of the car. There were so many cars full of so many people that should never be permitted to operate a motor vehicle, and then there were even more people milling around in the parking lot… let’s just say that Wal-Mart’s not happening for awhile.

That means no tart pan. So I made the Giant Reese’s Cup happen in a pie plate.

Some of you will remember that last month I was super extra whiny about my haircut. More specifically, The Worst Haircut I Have Ever Received. Not even kidding. I had lots of requests for photos, but I held off until I could get an appointment to fix it, because disaster hair photos are only fun if you can before/after it. So I’ll remind you that before that lady assaulted me with scissors, my hair was reeeeally long. Most of the way down my back, and all kindsa unruly wavy curly. Because it’s so crazy, I usually wore it like this:

That’s like 9 bobby pins and a strategically placed pencil keeping the mess out of my face. I needed a little change. When I went for my first hair appointment I asked for THIS.

We had a cocker spaniel when I was a kid. Her name was Lindy and she had some really curly unruly hair. Lindy went to the groomer’s every now and again because, like me, she needed to tame the mess.

I had no idea my stylist was channeling my childhood pet when she cut almost 11 inches off of my hair, but, well… there it is.my awful haircut

You see the similarities? Also this look was the improved version that included 94 bobby pins instead of 9. You can’t see the stringy bangs she gave me that stretched down to my lips.

The flat iron made this cut even more ridiculous. I resembled my 12-year-old self in a really creepy way.

This Saturday my sister and her super awesome ACTUAL stylist saved the day.

I cannot tell you what a relief this is.

Thank you Chrystal and Lindsey!!!

Also, this photo was after I spent all afternoon running errands and then produced the slightly high-maintenance birthday cake. My sweater is strategically buttoned so you can’t see the chocolate ganache smeared across my pink shirt. What I’m saying is, this is the unpolished version of the new haircut. And I love it.

So back to the cake.

It is not my recipe. Google served me up a whole bunch of giant Reese’s results, most of them involving folding parchment paper all accordion-style which I was really not feeling.

The pie plate worked out just fine and dandy.

I also didn’t bother rolling out the crust as per the instructions. I like to live dangerously (unless it involves scissors near my hair). This chocolate pastry was sorta crumbly, so I just pressed it into the pie plate. Low maintenance. I like it.

This peanut butter filling, though… Ohhhhh my goodness. I could live off this stuff.

Totally amazing.

This actually comes together really easily and pretty quickly; just leave enough time to refrigerate and let it all set.

You can find the recipe HERE at A Cozy Kitchen.

How was your weekend? Busy? Lazy? I hope it was lazy. I envy you that.

  1. I’m so glad you’re happier with your hair! It does look gorgeous :D

    • Thanks, Carol Anne! I’m just glad I no longer resemble our family pet. Or a misguided middle-schooler. Relief!!

  2. A bad haircut can ruin your day–or your holiday season, because when else do you take a million photos of your family. Your new cut is really, lovely! Glad you found someone to make it all better!

    • Thanks, Deanna!! A bad haircut is like a MAJOR assault on your self esteem. Thanksgiving was a prime example of all the photo snapping– the photo of my disaster hair was from Thanksgiving… after the first few I piled my cocker spaniel curls back on top of my head so I’d look normal!

Pretty, pretty hair!!! Mine is long now and in need of a makeover so Happy new Year to me I’m heading to the salon!!
Happy belated birthday to your bro..The cake/pie looks delish!!

    • Thanks!! I like my hair long but it was looking fried from the sun and the straightener. I needed something different. And now I have learned that if I want a decent cut, I have to drive OUT OF THIS COUNTY to get it. That was the 5th and worst bad cut I got out here, all at different salons. That pie/Reese’s cup/birthday cake was SO GREAT!! Thanks to A Cozy Kitchen for such a super recipe.

  4. I love your hair styling as it looks so nice and healthy, shiny and it fits you:) I know what you mean about long hair…..I am still trying to grow it out again but it takes time….it is getting there though:) Have a Happy Monday!!!!

    • Thanks! My hair hasn’t been this short in years. She blew it out for me so it was all shiny and hair salon bouncy that day, but the cut has made my curls extra curly. I love it.

      • I would love to have some curls…..my hair is naturally straight….and it has its days:)

  5. Peggy Campbell

That Reece’s birthday dessert was sooo rich! I could only eat a small amount and with Milk! But Spencer knocked down the rest of it- a giant sized wedge that he had no trouble with. He said it is his new favorite! Thanks for being such a great provider of all things sweet!

    • I loved that cake (or whatever is was). Yay for Spencer and the clever birthday dessert request!

  6. Love your hair!

I’m sorry about your debit card. =( That really stinks.

I made a version of your Kit Kat Cake for Boo’s birthday. Instead of Kit Kats I used Chocolate-PB sticks and put PB M&Ms on top. I’ll have to try this cake next year because he loves chocolate and peanut butter!

    • Thanks, Thoughtsy! The debit card thing is annoying but we were fortunate enough to not lose anything. We are just inconvenienced for awhile. The peanut butter changes to that cake sound great! We love chocolate & peanut butter round here. This giant Reese’s cup was a big hit and it was really simple. Happy Late Birthday to Boo!

  7. YAY!!! I’m so glad you got your hair fixed, it looks BEE-YOO-TEE-FULL (although, while everyone else is being polite about it – I entirely love that you put up the spaneil-similarity ‘before’ pic! haha – you poor thing!!) Chocolate and peanut butter = a good birthday cake as far as I can see! Hope he had a great day, and that you’ve got your bank card sorted now!

    • Everyone WAS nice about it, right? I left myself wide open for ruthless teasing and no one grabbed the opportunity. I will say though that when I told my sisters that I looked like our childhood pet and then they saw me, they kept laughing and saying that it wasn’t that bad but since I put the image in their heads it was all they could see. Thanks for keeping it real!! Bank card situation is resolved, thank goodness!! And this was a pretty bangin birthday cake.

  8. First off you hair looks amazing!!! You are a beautiful woman!!! Even when your hair was ‘disastrous’ I actually think it still looked pretty and you did not look like your dog lol Crazy girl!!! Moving on to cake…(I feel ya on the Walmart situation lol) I WANT SOME FLUFFY PEANUT BUTTER FILLING PLEASE!!!! Damn that looks good lol I never heard of a Reeses cake but if I ever decide to eat cake again I might opt for this one!!! haha BTW I’m so behind it’s ridiculous…this is me catching up haha
