Almost 2 years ago I started this blog with absolutely ZERO in the way of knowledge about food blogs or social media or photos of anything besides my kids. My internet recipes were all found on Allrecipes.com (yep. You know what I’m talking about.), but mostly I just cooked from a stack of magazines, books, and scrappy clippings hanging around, and more often than that off the top of my head. I lost my job through a series of super weird events and went from working away from home 50-60 hours a week to being home all day trying to figure out what in the world I wanted to do with myself.

I have always cooked. I love it. Methodically slicing and dicing is a stress reliever. Kneading bread takes all the worries away. Playing with flavor combinations and simplifying kinda fancy things is a major creative outlet. I had that part down.

The writing comes naturally to me. If you know me in real life, you know I talk a lot. So words on the page are just an extension of that for me.

But in writing a food blog, in getting people to really WANT to make the recipes you are so excited to share, there is a crucial component: photography.

I can very vividly remember in the beginning being thrilled to death- like to the point that I called Chad at work all excited- about having 30 views a day on my page. Granted, 5 of them were probably me and the other 25 were probably my mom and sisters but whatever. I was super pumped that anyone at all cared what I had to say. Or make.

But it wasn’t until I started paying more attention to the IMAGES that I really saw an increase in interest. The food you share has to LOOK like your reader wants to eat it!!

It’s as simple as that.

Let me offer a disclaimer and be real here for a minute: I still pretty much have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to food photography. I do not have a fancy expensive camera (it’s gonna happen sometime but right now what needs to happen is the new house!). I use a little point and shoot Nikon. My kitchen is cramped, dysfunctional and tiny so I do not have some fancy schmancy place to stage an elaborate set. And I would look at other food blogs and say, “Well they must have a gourmet kitchen,” or, “I can’t shop at Anthropologie!,” or, “My camera isn’t good enough for this.”

Then I found Tasty Food Photography.

Tasty Food Photography is an eBook written by blogger Lindsay Ostrom. Not only is she super talented with a camera, but Lindsay is a school teacher which gives her this amazing ability to simplify things that seem difficult. She lays it all out and makes the task at hand very easy to learn. Add to these things that Lindsay just spent a year in the Philippines volunteering her time at a home for kids while living in a cramped apartment with very minimal amenities — and her photos are still gorgeous and amazing.

So I thought, well dang. If she can drag a little flea market table under a window in the Philippines while using the same 5 dishes for 12 months and still get a good shot then I can too. (P.S. I am a big fan of run-on sentences today.)

So I bought the book and started to learn. It’s broken into chapters devoted to all the crucial parts of photographing tasty treats. There is help for the technical aspects, lighting tips, specifics on composition and props. Lindsay can tell you how to edit, how to choose the camera that’s right for you, and what she wishes she knew from the start.

Fresh peaches, strawberries, and blueberries are baked under a crumbly brown sugar and oatmeal topping. Served with a big scoop of ice cream this Peach Berry Crumble makes a perfect summer treat!

Serves: 4 - 6
Ingredients
  • Fruit Filling:
  • 4 cups fresh ripe peaches, peeled and cubed
  • 1½ cups fresh strawberries, hulled and coarsely chopped
  • 1½ cups fresh blueberries
  • 1½ tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • pinch of salt
  • Crumble Topping:
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons softened butter
Instructions
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 375 and butter a 9 X 9 baking dish (8 X 8 works too. Or a pie plate.
  2. Toss the peaches, strawberries, and blueberries with the 1½ tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, and pinch of salt. Spread the mixture even ly across the prepared pan.
  3. In a large bowl combine the oats, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Add the butter in with your fingers to form a coarse crumbly topping.
  4. Spread the topping over the fruit and bake for 25-30 minutes. The topping will be golden and the fruit will be bubbly.
  5. Serve warm {with ice cream!!}.

  2. I’ve loved cooking for some time now, but I recently discovered how much I love food photography. I never really learned the “proper” ways to do it though – or let’s say the best way to do good food photography. I read blogs with gorgeous pics and, they were a huge source of inspiration. Practice helps too! But this books seems like very interesting to go a step further :-)

Well, I don’t need a food photography book, but I do need to say how excited/pleased I am for you and what you’ve done with this blog – you have worked so hard on it and even since I tagged on and started following you, I’ve loved seeing how it’s grown – you should feel proper well proud! (PS I always think your food looks yum – especially the chocolatey-cakey-ice-creamy stuff! hehe!)
