York Peppermint Brownies... Oh Yes.
**********UPDATE 1/30/2013: First I'd like to say a great big huge THANK YOU for reading Sugar Dish Me; the response on this post has been great!! Second... many of you have left comments and sent emails with questions about this recipe, and while I have addressed those issues specifically to each individual, I wrote an updated post (with better photos, including the finished product!!) to help. Several readers have had trouble with the peppermint patties busting through the top of the brownies while baking- advice on that is included. You can find the updated post HERE.
I have been crazy stupid busy with last minute shopping, wrapping, and of course baking. Also Chad and I narrowly missed being run over by an extremely aggressive old lady with a shopping cart full of ugly Christmas garbage yesterday, so you can understand my minor preoccupation and lack of recipe posts.
I'm sorry!!!
To make it up to you I submit my favorite last minute Christmas idea to date: York Peppermint Brownies. Oh yes. I did that
.
Make brownies.
My favorite brownie recipe is here: Forgotten Homework & Brownies
Pour half of your brownie mix into the prepared pan and then line up bite sized York Peppermint Patties.

Pour the rest of the batter over the brownies.

Bake.
Eat.
Merry Christmas!!!!

I tried these but used Zachary brand peppermint patties. During baking, they sank to the bottom of the pan and became very chewy and made cutting difficult. All in all, kind of a mess. They tasted good, though. I'd like to try again using York Peppermint Patties, to see if the brand of candy I used is what caused the problem.
Hi, Martha! I think other readers have had trouble with the peppermint patties rising up instead of sinking down... I'd definitely be interested to know if the brand makes a difference! I've never had any trouble with mine but will have a go again soon and see if I can replicate/solve some of the issues. Plus I feel like I might owe you all some proper finished brownie photographs! Thanks for reading-- Happy New Year!!!
I want to see what it looks like after you cut them...you will need to make these again for me lol I must see the white fluffy pepperminty filling inside....oh my GOD do I love peppermint patties hahahahahahah DROOLING!!!
How do you keep the peppermint patty from coming out of the top in a gooey mess? I just made them, but mine are really messy!
Ummm... I've not had that problem before but I think one other commenter had a similar question; I'd try not pouring quite so much brownie batter on the bottom before laying out the peppermint patties. Maybe 1/3 batter, then patties, them 2/3 batter would work better for you? Hope that helps! Let me know!
I, too, had them come out pretty messy. I am unable to tell if it's patty mess or unbaked batter. I love this recipe so I will try again! Thank you for sharing!!
Do you think I could just double your brownie recipe to make a 9x13 pan of them?
Absolutely! The more the merrier.
Just made these! Actually just came out e oven! But the York patty popped thru the mix so where I placed the patty looks like marshmallow coming thru the brownie! I'm sure they will be great still!
Hi, Meliza! Hope you enjoy them... this is still one of my all-time favorite things I've posted ever!
Would this work in chocolate cake?
Absolutely. Layer it just the same way and follow the baking instructions for the cake mix. Cupcakes would be awesome, too!!! (1 peppermint patty per cupcake).
I made these with your brownie recipe a while ago and lived them. I wanted to make them again using your brownie recipe, but the link no longer works. 🙁 Can you fix that, please?
Yes yes! So sorry!!
Thanks so much for the heads up!! Fixed.
These looks SO good. I pinned them as well! I don't know why I've never thought of this--brownies & york peppermint patties are two of my favorite things.
Thank you!! Make them. And then eat one for me!!
Oh they look so good! Love the combo of mint + chocolate. Pinned!
Thanks, Averie! It's good to have something to do with peppermint patties (besides just eating the whole bag).
Yummy!
I know, right? I think I need to put the peppermint patties in the Starbucks Double Fudge Brownies... Also, I am waaay excited about the peppermint filling recipe you gave me. Thanks SO much!!
Yummy going to try this i still have Girl Scouts Thin Mints in my freezer so they will be perfect
I really wish I could find some Girl Scouts to sell me cookies. I always have to get my fix from Edy's ice cream! The Thin Mint idea is amazing.
you can call you local Girl Scout council and they can put you in touch with a troop,
Thanks, Shannon!
when baking brownies, watch for them PULLING away from the sides of the pan, as soon as you notice them doing that.. Take them OUT, they are DONE!
Thanks, Tami! I love a good dense fudgey brownie. This brownit recipe also works quite well with the peppermint patties:
https://www.sugardishme.com/2012/08/01/starbucks-double-fudge-brownie/
They come out perfect everytime (even if I don't watch them too closely)!
o.m.g. think I gained 5 pounds drooling over your pictures! question - do you have to alter the baking time or temp due to the patties?
thanks for sharing! found you on pinterest 🙂
Hi Suzie! I don't alter the baking time or temp to account for the peppermint patties, but I like my brownies a little on the fudgey/undone side. Just watch 'em closely and take them out when the consistency is how you'd normally like your brownies to be 🙂
are they mini pepermint patties?
Hi, Chey! Yes... they are the snack sized York peppermint patties. like the size you'd use for stocking stuffers.
I've been making these for years now. It's the only way to make peppermint brownies. 🙂
There is a special place in my heart for York peppermint patties; they make a brownie special the way no peppermint extract can. Also... you can snack on them while you bake. Bonus.
